NUNO FELTING

WHAT IS IT?

Nuno felting is a fabric felting technique developed by Polly Stirling, a fiber artist from New South Wales, Australia, around 1992, in collaboration with her assistant Sachiko Kotaka.

By manipulating a small amount of wool fiber through a pure base fabric, such as silk (I use chiffon silk and pongee silk) or cotton, a light fabric is obtained,   with very different characteristics compared to traditional felt, in a wide range of material effects and colors, with fascinating textures.

The name derives from the Japanese word “nuno” which means fabric.

The fibers (wool, silk, vegetable fibers such as hemp, linen, etc.)  can completely cover the background fabric, or they may be used as a decorative design.
